It's funny, we're following the "Dark Shadows" DVD releases - and they just ended a storyline with parallel time. The same physical people were there but they'd all made different decision and become different persons. Barnabas (the vampire) had to prevent an evil sorceress from destroying the Collins family.
Beyond sci-fi films, science has also done very interesting research on paraller universes. Actually I think it was hawcking who created the theory of the 11 dimensions of the universe and the paraller universes. (Although after years I think he denied it could be proved). There was an article in PM magazine on this on which I sent a lengthy comment, but they only published one paragraph.
